My name is Sara Hougham (pronounced Huff-um) and I am so excited to be a part of the Canyon Creek Elementary family as the school counselor! I graduated from The University of Texas with a degree in Applied Learning and Development, later graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Professional Counseling from Texas State University. I began my career in education teaching second grade in Pflugerville ISD and three years later, I became a Gifted and Talented teacher working with Kindergarten through fifth grade students in the Gifted and Talented program. After six years of teaching, I joined Round Rock ISD as a school counselor.This is my tenth year as a school counselor and I absolutely love getting to work with all students in my role to meet their social, emotional, and academic needs by visiting classrooms every three weeks through guidance lessons, facilitating small counseling groups, and working with students individually on a limited basis. I also try to ignite passion for taking action through building leadership capacity in our students through initiatives like No Place for Hate, Peer Mediation, and Comets Who Care, and by encouraging acts of deep care, empathy, and perspective taking as often as possible.
As the school counselor, my goal is to support students in building a school family where every child feels valued, cared for, and welcomed by creating an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated and everyone knows they belong. I also want to provide students with the necessary skills so they are ready to surpass their own goals and take action in a positive way in our world. And as an elementary school counselor (and typically the first counselor students will ever encounter), I want every child to know that counselors care deeply for their well-being so that if and when they need, now or 50 years from now, they know counselors will be there to provide support throughout their life.
