Resources to Support Families through the COVID-19 Pandemic

In this time of uncertainty, I am sure many of you may be feeling anxious and overwhelmed while trying to find a balance in this new (for now) normal. Juggling home life, work life, and school life may feel chaotic as we simultaneously continue to cultivate the feeling of love and safety for our children, which our CCE parents have always been incredible at doing. Please know that you are not alone in your feelings and that you have an entire community behind you to support.

Self-care for parents in this time is so important, because in order for us to best take care of our children, we must take care of ourselves first: this article from Child Mind Institute has numerous strategies for self-care during the time of COVID-19. Modeling self-care is also important to show our children how to care for themselves and regulate (with your support) during difficult moments in their life. Having a special spot in your home where your children (and you!) can go to relax, write feelings, draw, color, read, breathe deeply, or fidget can be extremely helpful in self-regulation.

Additionally, having a space to talk about feelings in general is imperative for children so they aren’t forced to keep everything inside, whether feelings about COVID-19 or being stuck at home with a sibling with a love-hate relationship! Child Mind Institute has helpful tips about talking with your child about COVID-19. Please know that not speaking about anxiety producing topics can cause children to create even scarier thoughts about what’s happening in their own brain, so talking about this in a developmentally appropriate way is extremely helpful for children. Understanding that our children may be acting differently due to underlying anxiety and supporting them during this time with extra measures such as maintaining routines and structure at home can also create a feeling of safety for our children. Also, giving your kids control in a situation they have little control is important; even something small like spreading kindness by sending cards to local retirement homes to keep their spirits up can be beneficial for our children (cards can be sent to Inspiring Happiness c/o GreenRidge at Buckner Villas, 11110 Tom Adams Dr, Bldg A, Austin, TX 78753).

You are amazing parents, and together, we will get through this! Child Mind Institute has a variety of resources (many that I’ve already linked) that can be found here. Please know you can always reach out if you need anything (sara_hougham@roundrockisd.org). Hugs!
